23.11.2010
On November 23, for the fifth time, seven international graduate schools and research institutions located in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded the NRW Young Scientist Award to undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. They awarded those who managed to publish an outstanding paper in a peer-reviewed journal in 2009 or 2010. In the award ceremony that took place at the Karl-Arnold-Haus der Wissenschaften in Düsseldorf, Dr. Walther Pelzer (representing the Ministry of Innovation) Science and Research of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, handed the award (1,500 Euro) to the seven recipients.
This year, the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics chose Nicolas Ziebarth, a doctoral student from the DIW in Berlin, to be the winner in the category of Economics. Ziebarth received the award for his article „Estimating Price Elasticities of Convalescent Care Programmes“, which was published in the Economic Journal in June 2010. In his laudatio, Prof. Dr. Christoph M. Schmidt, president of the RWI and director of the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics, praised the paper’s methodology and policy relevance. In the article, the author estimated the impact of price changes on the demand for convalescent care in Germany; a topic of great importance when discussing health care reforms.
